Exit 28 on I-275 and the “New Gandy Freeway”

I-275 SOUTH:

The first sign showing Gandy Blvd is this mileage sign. 38th Ave N (Exit 25) is in 1/4 mile, and 54th Ave N (Exits 26A/26B) are in 1 1/4 miles. Gandy Blvd (Exit 28) is in 3 miles.

1 mile until the exit to Gandy Blvd, which is exit 28. Gandy Blvd continues as Park Blvd once you go through the US 19 overpass.

Final opportunity for exit 28.

The exit ramp to Gandy Blvd is original, but the exit sign to the left was installed in 2013 (the exit 28 sign).

Heading to Pinellas Park, Seminole, or Indian Shores? Use SR 694 West, and then make a left at the traffic light.

GANDY BLVD EAST:

Here is a history of the Gandy Freeway:

After being shelved for decades, the Gandy Freeway section from 4th Street to I-275 was built at a cost of $83 million USD. The project comprised a four to six lane highway, with overpasses at 4th Street/Roosevelt Blvd, 9th Street, and 94th Avenue. A four lane frontage road system (two lanes in each direction) would parallel the structures.

Now, we are on the "New Gandy Freeway" heading eastbound. The exit for 94th Avenue/16th Street is in 1/4 mile. Use the right lane for the exit. The second exit for US 92 and SR 687 to I-275 South is in 0.5 miles.

Final opportunity for the 94th Avenue/16th Street exit. The next exit for US 92/SR 687 is in 1/4 mile. Use the right 2 lanes for the next exit.

If you want to go to 4th Street from this exit, you can skip the traffic lights and exit here. Just take 94th Avenue until you see 4th Street.

Final opportunity for the US 92/SR 687 exit. The two left lanes are for East Gandy Blvd to SR 618.

Derby Lane is a greyhound racing track located in St. Petersburg, FL and opened in 1925 and also features poker and a restaurant. Due to Amendment 13, Derby Lane is going to close on December 31, 2020 to end all greyhound racing in Florida after 95 years.

GANDY BLVD WEST:

Use the right lane for the exit to 4th Street/SR 686 (Roosevelt Blvd). The 2 left lanes are for Gandy Blvd to South I-275.

Follow these signs to get to your specific destination in St. Petersburg! These signs are seen from one of the frontage roads. A portion of the Gandy Freeway can be seen on the left side of this photo.

Image taken on 6/6/2018. The right lane is for the ramp to I-275 South. For I-275 North, use 4th Street. The left 3 lanes are for SR 694 (Gandy Blvd). There were plans to upgrade Gandy Blvd and Grand Avenue into an elevated highway, but was later cancelled, because of the Wawa gas station.
